Butterflies in arid Namaqualand

Pontia helice helice - mating pair
Last week I had been working on an EIA assessment just east of Springbok in Namaqualand (Northern Cape, South Africa).  Though it is a winter rainfall region, the area is currently very dry since it last had proper rain in 2009.  It was remarkable to observe large numbers of butterflies flying around the rocky koppies despite the dry, cold conditions.  The species in picture - Pontia helice helice (Common Meadow White - Bontrokkie) - was particularly abundant.  The conditions did not deter the pair from mating.  The other species observed regularly was Vanessa cardui (Painted Lady - Sondagsrokkie).
